Inclusivity Statement

Updated: May 20, 2022

August 11th, 2020

Dear Friends of The Clay Studio of Missoula,

The Clay Studio of Missoula stands in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and those who demand justice and equality for our Black communities. We support the end of racism and efforts to reform policy to ensure a safe and equal existence for all Black, Indigenous, People of Color.

As an arts organization that champions inclusivity, it is imperative for us to take a step back, re-examine our programs, and recognize the areas in which we can be more fully inclusive and accessible.

Over the past several weeks, we have spent time examining shortcomings and discussing solutions. Every system, no matter how well intentioned, has room for improvement and change. As an organization that largely serves Missoula, we want to have meaningful impact and improve access for EVERYONE in our regional community.

Our Outreach & Engagement Committee has identified key goals we are committed to realizing. These include:

  • developing more partnerships and program opportunities with other social service organizations and regional BIPOC and LGBTQ groups

  • forming additional partnerships and projects with youth organizations

  • developing more programs and innovative services for people with disabilities

  • expanding our scholarship/financial aid programs

  • exploring increased exhibition, educational, and residency opportunities focusing on BIPOC/LGTBQ artists working in the MT/Northwest region.

We recognize that many of our goals will take time to accomplish, and that some new programs will be a challenge to conduct in the midst of a pandemic. However, this current pause in full operational capacity gives us the opportunity to devote time to develop these meaningful programs, resources, and collaborations.

If you have any constructive thoughts or ideas for collaborations, partnerships and projects, please do reach out to us. We look forward to making new connections, promoting anti-racism, and creating inclusive opportunities in ceramics in Missoula.

Sincerely,

Shalene Valenzuela

Executive Director, The Clay Studio of Missoula
